Price fluctuations delay wind farm expansion study

Release Date: 03 July 2006

Surging global prices for steel and copper have delayed the completion of the feasibility study into the expansion of the Albany wind farm.

Verve Energy is investigating the possibility of adding another seven turbines, with the aim of increasing the wind farm's output to 90 per cent of the city's power needs.

The company says the fluctuations in the price of steel and copper have been so great that it has been difficult to determine the likely cost of the project.

High demand for wind turbines in Europe is also making it difficult to buy new turbines.

Verve says negotiations are continuing with suppliers with the aim of locking in prices and delivery times by September.
