Verve Energy Board of Directors met for the first time at Muja Power Station today (Wed 17 May 2006).
Board chairman Peter West said it was only the Board’s second formal meeting since the company was established as the stand-alone generation business from the separation of Western Power.
“One of our earliest commitments to Verve Energy staff was to meet at power stations several times each year,” he said.
“Verve Energy has substantial activities in the Collie and Kwinana regions. It is important for us to become familiar with these operations, with our people and the regions in which they work.”
At Collie Verve Energy had the Muja and Collie Power Stations, which with a combined generating capacity of almost 1400 megawatts, provides more than 40% of the total portfolio.
“Verve Energy has had a long association with the coal industry and Collie,” Mr West said.
“That link will continue for many years as the result of the long-term coal-supply arrangements made recently.
“Nevertheless it is important to recognise that the electricity market is changing and will never be the same. These changes will have an impact on all parties including Collie.
“Verve Energy is aware of these changes and is taking steps to adapt. The alternative is clear. Collie has a lot at stake.
“While the WA community may acknowledge the value of coal as a fuel for making electricity, it also is becoming more insistent on our industry becoming more environmentally aware.
.
“Clean, environmentally friendlier coal is worth pursuing, “ Mr West said.
While in Collie, the Verve Energy Board members were shown over Muja Power Station and met local stakeholders.
