Climate Change

Verve Energy will play its part in state and national strategies to improve environmental performance.

While climate change is a global challenge that ultimately needs a global solution, Verve Energy sees the introduction of a local or national solution as beneficial.

While Verve Energy will continue to rely heavily on fossil fuels to meet the demand by Western Australians for electricity in the foreseeable future, we will do more to reduce our impact on the environment.

Verve Energy will:

  • Continue to pursue and introduce appropriate technologies such as wind, wind-diesel, biofuels and biomass; and close old inefficient plant (such as Kwinana Power Station
    Stage B).
  • Support the introduction of a national scheme to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Carbon trading has been talked about for some time; and Verve Energy has participated in those discussions at State and national level through groups such as the Energy Supply Association of Australia (esaa) and National Generators Forum (NGF).

A carbon trading regime needs to be applied equitably to all emitters and to all generators in Australia. One regime is preferable to multiple regimes.

A phased-in program also will allow new technologies to be tested rigorously for their commercial introduction and strategies to be prepared to lower emission levels.

  • Pursue and support clean coal technology research.
  • Support the introduction of price signals that encourage energy efficiency.
  • National or State strategies are an opportunity for Verve Energy to continue to lead the way and make incremental changes and improvements to our performance.
