Coral Bay Wind-Diesel System

Verve Energy installed a wind farm at Coral Bay in August 2007.

The three 275kW wind turbines tap into the district’s abundant wind supply, and are backed up by a new efficient diesel power station.

The wind turbines, which can be lowered if a cyclone threatens the town, are able to produce up to 45% of the community’s electricity requirements; and the power station hasthe capacity to meet full power needs. The power station has eight low-load diesel engines capable of producing 2240kW of electricity. The power lines to distribute the electricity in town were put underground.

Verve Energy has particular expertise in wind turbines running in conjunction with diesel power stations. These combined systems are marketed through Verve Energy’s brand name “Diesel & Wind Systems”.

Coral Bay's power supply was a joint project by Verve Energy’s Sustainable Energy Branch and regional electricity company Horizon Power.

Verve Energy’s Sustainable Energy Branch installed the wind turbines and low-load diesel power station. Similar wind-diesel systems are operating in Denham, Hopetoun, Rottnest and Bremer Bay.

Horizon Power coordinated the project, put in the underground power lines and billing systems. Coral Bay electricity consumers are now entitled to the uniform tariff and are eligible for rebates.

This project is supported by the Australian Government through the Renewable Remote Power Generation Program. The Program is implemented by the State’s Sustainable Energy Development Office in Western Australia.
