Biomass Co-Firing at Muja Power Station

Verve Energy has developed a biomass co-firing operation at Muja Power Station in partnership with WA pallet manufacturer Pinetec Ltd.

Pinetec built a sawmill and pallet making facility next to Muja Power Station in the south-west near Collie.

Sawmilling residue such as sawdust, bark and chips is burnt at the power station to make electricity.

In the two-way operation, Pinetec buys 2.5MW of electricity for its facility and steam for kiln drying from Verve Energy, and Verve Energy buys 78,000 tonnes of sawmill residue a year from Pinetec. The residue is mixed with coal to fire Muja Power Station.

The sawmill residue displaces some 45,000 tonnes of coal each year. The operation will save about 90,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year.
